Unhappy Can't play VCD.....Seek Failed!

HI guys, help me out

I tried playing VCD/DVD but it says "seek failed" in mplayer. I changed to ffmpeg family in both audio and video, but then also it displayed the same error.
I can't even copy video file from VCD.

Here's the output from dmesg
Quote:
Buffer I/O error on device hdd, logical block 5910
hdd: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdd: command error: error=0x54 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x05 }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 23644
Using Xine also fails. In the log it says " couldn't find demux for /media/cdrom/mpegav/avseq01.dat".

I have all the plugins installed already. I have already done "yum -y install gstreamer* lib* ffmpeg* *mp3*" , have w32codecs installed and everything.

The problem occurs only when I play any VCD/DVD, though it doesn't arise when some compiled CD or DVD is played. I can't watch any movie. Help...

Thanx for any help in advance!

If /dev/hdd is the correct device, and not /dev/hdc for example, the errors seem to indicate a problem with the VCD disc media itself, or a dirty laser on the drive, rather than a configuration problem.

The disc/hardware works perfectly under windows XP. I only get problems when I watch movie Cds or DvDs. The cds or DVDs containing data,clips etc compiled by me and by others works perfectly.

Any help or remote ideas??

Is this a new install? what distro? and what hardware?

I have had a similar problem with older versions of Kanotix & Knoppix, I would get seek errors on disks that would read OK under windows. I was never able to solve the problem.
I think it was something to do with the disk reader driver that was used but I was never able to find out how to upgrade this.

Eventually I found that newer versions of Kanotix did not have this problem so I upgraded the system but these distros had other problems so now I am using Debian etch/upgraded to sid. I haven't work all the bugs out of it yet either.

Not very encouraging, unfortunately.

I think this is a kernel problem. Have tried this on Fedora Core 6, openSUSE 10.2, and Slackware 11 (with the 2.6.18 kernel). All these have the 2.6.18 kernel, and I can't read VCDs on any. Infact, I've tried this with many VCDs, so I know its not a VCD problem. And it isn't a player problem either coz you can't even mount the VCD in the first place!

See this link btw -- http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/10/29/95

There was a link somewhere on the net (found it through Google, I don't recollect the URL now) where the poster discovered that this bug is present from after kernel 2.6.16. So I downgraded my Slackware kernel to 2.6.16, and sure enough it works!

I haven't downgraded the Fedora/ openSUSE kernels though. I sort of want to stick with the official kernels and was hoping somebody would patch this ... I'll check the Fedora Forums too and drop a similar note there.

Regards,
Rakhesh
