Can't play DVDs
For some reason, Kubuntu can't read any DVDs. Everytime I put one in, the program will either not be able to navigate the menus, or it will just crash right before the menu appears with no error message. I have tried KMPlayer, Kaffiene, Totem, GXine, and Ogle, and all have the same result. What can I do?
Thanks, BigFoot |
Have you installed libdvdcss? You will need that to play dvd's.

It sounds like you need libdvdcss.
Also note that MPlayer ia a rather limited DVD player as it doesn't support DVD menus, and Ogle is basically an abandoned project that was never completed. Xine-based players, or VLC should work perfectly well once libdvdcss is installed. |
Thanks guys. I have libdvdread3 and libdvdcss2 installed. I have been using Xine as the engine. All the others (MPlayer, GStreamer) won't be able to open any file, but Xine has been fine for all other media (CDs, MP3s, Wave sounds, WMVs, MPEGs, AVIs, etc.

I found the answer. Installing this and installing the AUD-DVD and Multimedia codecs worked.

xine for DVD playing.
xine should not crash. It should just display a message to the user indicating what went wrong. If it crashes, report it as a bug to the xinehq.de web site.
Unfortunately, Ubuntu's version of xine is not really xine at all. It is a largely crippled version of xine. This is due to some patent problems in some countries. I.e. Running the xinehq.de version might be illegal in your country. You will probably have to go to the xinehq.de web site, and download, compile and install xine-lib in order to get the full version of xine. James |
