Can't lock screen

I'm using red hat linux 9.0 and the gnome desktop. When I click on the lock screen option, nothing happens. This is also happening on my version 8.0 box. What am I missing here? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

i am going out on a limb here, and i'll start by saying that i never heard of this before, nor have seen it before *obviously* but i'll take a stab at it
do you not have a password for your user? if not maybe this is why it won't lock cause it probably thinks that if there is no password what is the point of locking the screen...this is just a wild guess, as i do not know if it reacts like this, but just a thought

I'm not sure if I get your question, but I'm the root user when I log in to the system.

The idea here is to NOT login as root..
U should log in as a normal user and "su" to root when needed...
This is due to security.
Being "root", U can not lock the screen...But if U R a normal user, U should be able to lock the screen.

Yeah, that's it.

Yeah, I realize that I shouldn't be logging in as root. However, I'm configuring the box and I spend so much time as root, sometime I get lazy and just log in as root. Anyway, thanks for the info.
