I just installed Gentoo 2004.0 from a stage1 install. using kernel 2.6.6-rc1
I installed XFree86, ran xf86config and for some reason can not get x to start properly. All I get is a black screen and an x as a mouse cursor. The mouse responds to movement I just have a black screen. When I use ctl+alt+bspace the x-server stops and I see the following error message
Quote:
(WW) RADEON(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0xf0000000,0x40000000)
I know I am missing something that is right under my nose but I can't see it. here are my configs.

I tried as you suggested and still got the same error. For the heck of it I disabled the vesaFB support in the kernel and turned off the bootsplash etc.. I no longer get the write-combining error message but I still just get a black screen with the cursor. when I ctrl+alt+bspace out I see no error messages on the console or in the XFree86.0.log.
For the heck of it I started x again and found that even though I just had the black screen if I left clicked I got the menu and was able to openan xterm and iconify etc.. I just had that black background. I am assuming this is ok but I am not sure since this is the first time that I have compiled XFree.
according to the Xfree log it shows that acceleration is enabled. When I try to run glxinfo all I get is an error saying "Couldn't open display (null). I did an "export DISPLAY=:0.0" and I still get the same error from glxinfo.
for the heck of it I backed up my XF86Config and tried to use xf86cfg. Here i get a similar error as with glxinfo "Can't open display :0.0".
any other ideas?

Maybe I shopuld ahve asked this first. Did you compile a Desktop environment or a windows manager? Without one of these you won't get anything when you start X windows. So you will need something like KDE or Gnome, which are desktop environments like a windows machine, or you could go with fluxbox which is a windows manager and does not offer the integration like KDE and Gnome. if you have a fast internet connection I suggest looking into Ximian Desktop 2 I have downloaded it and it is wonderful. Easy to use. The installer is nice too, you download the installer script answer some questions, it checks your system, gets all the files you need, downloads them, installs them. After that restart your xwindow session answer som config questions and your up and running.
I was thinking that it was something like that when I realized that I could open up xterms and what have you. I guess I was just expecting some sort of default background even with out the window manager. I'll go ahead and install gnome.
But I have to admit that I am still curious as to why I can't seem to get xf86cfg to work. I would assume that since it is a util to configure Xfree that it would be able to launch despite the lack of a window manager or desktop environment.
no it only configures the server. Xfree86 does not do any sort of windows manager or desktop environment. if you are going to install gnome I would still suggest ximian desktop 2.
