Can't get WINE to do anything...

The last time I used Linux was about 2 years ago. Back then I was able to get WINE to run at least notepad. So far, I hate all the IMs I've tried for Linux, so I wanted to see if I could get WINE to emulate Miranda IM, my personal favorite.

However, I can't get WINE to run _anything_

I know its a lot to ask, but I'm a complete newbie and I really want to learn.

I'm using mandrake 10...

here is the output I get. I ran it from konsole.

[hess@callisto hess]$ wine /mnt/c/Program Files/Miranda IM/miranda32.exe
fixme:reg:_nt_dump_lf unknown Win XP node id 0x686c: do we need to add support for it ?

Hi wcitech!

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.org. Wine is not bad, it simply does not work. When it looks like wine is going to be good, they release a new version that runs, well, nothing. WineX for games is a different case. It works and it works well. . I can see that you are running Miranda from your windows partition:

[hess@callisto hess]$ wine /mnt/c/Program Files/Miranda IM/miranda32.exe

You should not do that. Although a few applications might run in that way, wine can have a hard time finding the evil dll's that windows uses. There's a possibility that you are using NTFS(?) too on your windows C drive(?), and it will be even more difficult for wine. Try installing the program normally and see if it works.
Personally, I see no point of fighting like this to get an instant messenger to work with so, so many IM around natively made for Linux. It's better you get used to those and use wine only when really necessary (if it's ever necessary actually). Here is a table of equivalents Linux - Windows. If there's no equivalent, then it's time to consider wine...

Good luck!

Thank you for your quick response.
Although Linux definitely not ready for the desktop yet, I'm constantly amazed at how the open source world opens its arms to new users and how they're always willing to explain things.

First off, I did try copying Miranda to my home directory. Same results. I will try WineX, but quite honestly, I don't know how to install much ANYTHING. It was only today that I learned that you have to compile things that you download before you use them. Go figure! Well, I'll do my best to get WineX working, but I'll probably just be making another thread for that, too

Thanks again.

Update: Okay, I found a WineX RPM from some guy's website. Its even the latest version! But I don't know where to find it now. I did a search in Konqueror for WineX and winex, and I didn't turn much up. shouldn't it be in /bin or /usr/bin ?

Cool wcitech!. Keep in mind that winex is designed to run games: www.transgaming.com, and it does a great job . Ordinary programs (non-directx) most likely will fail miserably :d.
This thread:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=45094

will give you a good understanding of installing programs with Linux

Good luck mate!

UT2004 demo is out for Linux, you could give it a shot first and see how it goes . Remember to have the official drivers for you graphics card installed, otherwise your 3D performance will be very poor .

I start winex with:

winex3 <exectutable.exe>

that could be different for you though . You could always check where the programs are installed with the command whereis <program name>. All executables goes to /usr/bin/program_name (/usr/bin/winex3, for example)...

bash: winex3: command not found

I must have done something wrong...

I have a Radeon 9800. Windows seem to drag smoothly, I'm running at 1280 x 1024, however... OpenGL screensavers run REALLY slow and I'm not sure why. That was a problem I was going to mention at a later date. I'd at least like to get a good emulator running though, just so I can make an easy transition, and not just quit windows cold turkey.

even though when I try to run the .rpm again, it says everythings already installed, I don't think it is

there's no winex executable anywhere than I can find. do I have to compile it myself, even if its an RPM?

I don't know it this applies here as well, but...

... There's a free wineX that can be downloaded through CVS. That is distributed as source only, meaning that you have to compile it yourself. Doing that, winex will overwrite wine executable and be called with only wine <executable.exe>. That's what I heard though. If that applies also for rpm's is beyond my knowledge ...

Try running wine <game_setup.exe> and see if that works. Sorry I cannot help you with that. I really am not sure about those rpm's or source versions .

Good luck!

Don't use a Windows XP drive with DllOverrides set to native, builtin.

This is _documented_ please do not blame Wine because you deliberately altered the default configuration.

Install Wine from the source, using a fake windows drive, then install and run Miranda (it runs OK but nobody really cares because there are lots of native ICQ clients)

ha! see, there you go. I am a complete newbie, I don't know what CVS, DllOverrides set to native, or any of that stuff means. I'm not opposed to reading, just point me in the right direction. I didn't deliberately alter any configuration, I only unpackaged an RPM.

And the reason I want to use Miranda is A) because I like the things that it does that no other clients seem to do (disable groups, dock to right side of screen, customize icons, etc) and B) beceause I deleted my server-side ICQ contact list but my miranda.dat file has all of my contacts built in still.

Use GAIM, and the UT2004 DVD/6 CD set has the Linux installer right on the disk. There's no special box for Linux and one for Windows so don't worry.

I am using GAIM, thanks. Good to know about UT, I'll be buying it tomorrow probably, since none of the moronic stores in my town seem to have it today.

I'd still like to use Wine though, if nothing else for Winamp5 and Photoshop. I know that the GIMP is just as good, but photoshop is what I know.

I'm spenind more time each today in Linux and less time in windows. I just configured my e-mail.

I know some console commands, and I'm learning more.

If I could learn how to

a) install hardware drivers
b) install new software

I would be set to never boot into XP again

so check this out, I just figured out this whole "running shell scripts" thing. wow! I installed CVS, and winex is on about step 4 / 7 of installing. I really feel like I've learned a lot today, but I still haven't gotten it to finish.

sh GetCVSWineX_Pthreads

I get to step 4, which is Make Depend. I have gcc installed, but still I get this:

Error in Make depend

Try fixing the error based on the output above, and
run the script again, without paramaters (Eg: GetCVSWineX_Pthreads)
