Can't get Samtron 7Ei monitor to display graphics during Fedora Core 4 Installation.
Booting through the text portions is fine, however, the screen switches to an incorrect resolution and displays rubbish when passing to graphical protions of bootup.
Booting in 'single' mode to get login prompt is also fine (no graphics).
The Hardware is a Dell SC420 Server and I am using a KVM switch (to a second machine) between the Dell and the monitor.
I have tried poking around in xorg.conf using vi but am not really sure of what to set for 'monitor' 'video' and 'screen' portions of file.
I am computer literate (PhD electronics) but total Linux Newbie - All assistance gratefully received!
While on console, try to run as root: 'xorgconfig' and follow the instructions on screen. This text wizard will create a new xorg.conf file with the correct settings (provided you give them to it :-) )
Be carefule esp with the settings for the graphics card and monitor. You should probably use manual settings in order to make it work.
Used Dell Server install app - useless - reformatted harddisk and then said - 'sorry don't support Fedora'!
Tried Dell support and downloads - also useless - support 'sorry we don't support Fedora' - downloads - no linux drivers at all for the video controller.
So..... re-installed Fedora OS from disks
After install, ran 'Yum update' to get all latest patches - this worked fine but screen is still garbage in graphics mode...
Can boot linux in runmode 4 to get text prompt and login as root no probs but....
Can't find 'xorgconfig' utility! - remember I'm a linux newbie. It's not in /bin or /X11 and I'm not sure which text util to use to try to find stuff ( a bit daunted by instructions with 'find' util).
BTW I think the numbers in xorg.conf for the monitor are correct as the 320 x 240 that I have in the file under "Monitor" section apparently refer to screen size in mm not pixels (!).
First of all, make sure you are root.
You can do this by opening a console and typing: "su"
You will then be asked for root pass and then you get to his shell (you'll see the # symbol).
From there, type: 'xorg' and then press 'tab' twice.
You should get a list of all the possible commands starting with 'xorg'. See if there's any 'xorgconfig' or 'xorgcfg' there.
I'll be waiting for your info...
Ok,
I am definately root - ther are no other accounts and I have the # prompt.
When I type xorg <tab> <tab> I get no cmmands starting with xorg - is it possible that Fedora Linux doesn't have this util? I found a util called - 'system-config-display' which sounded like just what I needed - guess what..it's graphical!! As soon as I run it I'm back to garbabge screen. This version of linux has loads of 'system-config-xxxxxx' utils, I guess that they are all graphical, not much use when you have display problems!
