I had this printer working, before my computer crashed. After reinstalling I am unable to get it to work properly. I am trying to print a fdf file. I tried a number of drivers in cups through 'modify printer'. The printer doesn't print or

I get an error: "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"
How do I track the problem? Does someone know what is the correct driver. I have myself in the lpadmin group.
I have that driver installed according to aptitude:

I tried all the drivers for HP in the web interface for cups. All except one gave me this error: "load A4 paper" I checked and the pdf I was printing was 8.5x11 and the printer's default was set to letter. I could get these to print with a couple drivers that I tried if I pressed 'shift + continue'
The other driver printed one page with a couple lines of nonsense and just kept spitting out blank papers.
I'd like to figure out what the problem is. I didn't have a problem like this before I reinstalled and when I used this installation on my laptop.
Open a web browser. For the URL type http://localhost:631 and press enter. You should get Cups web interface. Press the Admin tab. Click Manage Printers. It should list your installed printer(s). With Maintenance in the left drop down, select Default Options in the right drop down. What options are set there ? Is it set for A4 or 8.5x11 paper size?
Save the correct paper size and try again.
Thanks that worked. I changed the setting in Cups.
This is the driver I used. I'm not sure which ones are the hplip driver

hplip is usually setup using the command hp-setup, or hp-setup -i, this will provide you with either a gui or a few questions in a text-mode setup utility to configure your printer.
