Can't get Knoppix 3.8 to connect to the internet.

I've installed Knoppix 3.8 to hard disk, but I can't get it to connect to the internet. I've been though the settup of kppp; I used the same modem control codes from my SuSE setup (after much effort with the default control codes). Kppp dials; no errors; connection is confirmed. The icon in the tray says connected and 49333 (dialup), but pppstatus says connection speed is just a handful of bits per second.

I'm at a loss where to look next.

Have you checked the drivers yet?

On the Linux 2.6 kernel it is fairly easy to find the module controlling a network interface. Go to "cd /sys/class/net". This has a directory for each network card. Find your modem in the list and "cd" into it. Then type "ls -l device/driver". The last thing on the line is the module that is loaded.

No joy. /sys/class/net has only one entry: lo, and it doesn't list my modem. The thing that baffles me is that serialstat only lists ttyS1 (no ttyS0). My modem in on COM1 (ttyS0) and that's the only config that dials out through the modem.

Hover the mouse cursor over the kppp icon in the tray; it says 'connected at 49666' (dialup). Click on 'details'; it says connection is less that 0.1 kbits/sec.

No errors returned; nothing in the logs (see other thread vis a vis not being able to get logging to work).

Does anyone know how to update/upgrade Knoppix on hard disk via apt4rpm running on SuSE?

I confess that I'm now desperate, and grasping at straws!
