Can't communicate with digital camera on MDK10.2

Howdy folks.
I just purchased a new digital camera (Canon 20D), and I can't get it to connect. My old camera (Canon G5) works fine and connects fine, but with this one when I plug it in the computer recognizes that there is a camera plugged in but is unable to connect to the camera itself. KDE tells me "Corrupted data", and the kernel tells me:

Mar 2 13:26:32 localhost kernel: usb 4-5: new high speed USB device using address 9
Mar 2 13:26:42 localhost su(pam_unix)[6600]: session opened for user root by damaged(uid=500)
Mar 2 13:26:48 localhost kernel: usb 4-5: usbfs: interface 0 claimed while 'kcontrol'sets config #1
Mar 2 13:26:48 localhost kernel: usb 4-5: usbfs: USBDEVFS_BULK failed ep 0x81 len 64 ret -75

I have no idea what this means, nor do I have any clue where to begin to solve this. It confuses me that my other camera works just fine but apparently newer cameras don't work so well.
I'm using kernel 2.6.8.1-20mdk if that matters. It seems like this should work just fine, all the programs I use for digital cameras recognize that there is a "Canon 20D normal mode" plugged in.. None can connect though??
All I do know is that this isn't kernel specific, I tried 2.6.10 a few minutes ago and that does not work either.
This is nuts! Why won't it work?!?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

A bit of googling suggested that you try different usb ports (if you have more than one). Seems to be a common problem with epson scanners.

Do you have any idea what exactly is kde doing with your usb? Can you try it and post the dmesg without kde running? -- You should be able to log onto console (by pressing ctrl-alt-f1) before logging into kde, plug in the camera, and look the dmesg.

Hi there & thanks for the reply
My dmesg never has anything to say about anything in my system once my computer's booted up, its always just the typical kernel stuff? I couldn't find anything referring to my camera...
All KDE is really trying to do is "test" its communications with the camera to begin with, which always seems to fail. Even without kde, I can't get anything to actually communicate with the camera, I always receive the "corrupted data" thing, or just nothing at all.
I noticed those posts about Epson scanners but I couldn't find anything that actually meant anything to me, or would provide me with some steps to take from here.
I tried some other USB ports and none of them seem to want to do anything either.
It seems confusing to me that another canon camera works just fine yet this model apparently doesn't..
I guess this really doesn't provide you with any new information than my previous post. The only other thing I can think of to add is that when I plug it in and go to console and "lsusb" I do get:
Bus 004 Device 004: ID 04a9:30eb Canon, Inc.
So it does see it as being there... Somewhere along the line it just can't transfer information..

One more thing to add.
I just plugged this camera into another computer running virtually the same setup, though slightly less screwed up from me messing with it. It does not use KDE at all, so I figured this would be another way to make sure there was no KDE interference.
I plugged it in, started fvwm and opened up flphoto to see if it could communicate.
After it failed, I checked the /var/log/messages output and this is what it has to say... Pretty much the same thing really:

Mar 3 16:05:13 Lords-Machine kernel: usb 1-1: usbfs: interface 0 claimed while 'flphoto' sets config #1

Download and run "gphoto2" and try if it's able to communicate with the camera.

Also try to connect the camera to a low-speed USB port, since some USB controllers have problems with linux. My usb2-intel controller can't communicate with my Nokia phone, while my low-speed ALi controller works without problem.

Canon Digital Cameras

I am also having a similar problem connecting a Canon S70 Digital camera. I use SuSE 9.2 Pro and DigiKam software package. When I connect the camera via usb to the computer, linux sees the camera with no problem... infact, a couple of times I was actually able to download pictures out of the camera into the DigiKam software directory... I googled for awhile a came up with this explanation... SuSE 9.2 Pro uses Linux Kernel 2.68... something in the 2.68 kernel, ie a safety feature of some sort is what the article said... inhibits the kernel from allowing certain digital camera's from communicating with the Digikam software. Anyway, I'm not sure if this is correct or not... and the article didn't suggest any fix except that this issue would be resolved in the next kernel release for linux.

If you find out a way to correct the problem... please post it... My wife is driving me crazy over this little problem... She's the one who uses the camera.

I tried gphoto2 and it also says Corrupted data.
I debugged it and got this (sorry for the long stream of data, couldnt figure out how to attach files. Output of gphoto2 at bottom of post..)
The other thing I just thought of is, is there any chance it isn't working because the camera can use USB2.0 and my computer only has usb1?

Heres the gphoto2 output:

A quick update.
I changed it to PTP mode, which seemed to help but still gets me nowhere. Now, it reads fine apparently, every program I put it into (except DigiKam, which still says it cannot connect) says its getting the list of files, goes through its whole progress bar (Given the program has one) and then says there are no files on the camera (which of course there are)..
So, I suppose you could call that progress.. still have no idea where to go though
I get this type of thing for an error now:

Mar 3 18:26:32 localhost kernel: usb 4-5: bulk timeout on ep1in
Mar 3 18:26:32 localhost kernel: usb 4-5: usbfs: USBDEVFS_BULK failed ep 0x81 len 512ret -110

Did you ever get this working? I have a 20D also and have been running into similar problems. I'm using both gphoto2 (2.1.5, with gtkam front end) and digikam under updated Mandrake 10.1. In Normal mode, neither one can initialize the camera. In PTP mode, it will find the camera and a directory called "store_00000001" (number of zeros might not be right, but you get the idea). Neither program can read the files from this directory....and while farting around looking for parameters to change in the camera's menu, I mistakenly reformatted the damn card, losing over 120 pictures....crap!. Anyway, took a couple of more, no difference - neither utility can find the pictures.

Here's a dump from gphoto2 in debug mode: (sorry it's so long)...obviously, it's finding the directory; there's one picture in it and the filename is being read. But when I try to download it using either GUI, it can't read any pictures....it says that the directory has no pictures (see near end of dump below).

Anyone got this working with the 20D?

Thanks for any help....Bob

Nope it never got working for me. I asked my brother about it a while ago (he writes USB drivers) and he said that basically the drivers that it uses aren't really usable (to put it simply), and that he'd have to write me new drivers for it. So, in light of how much work that would be, I've been using a flash card reader.. it works, just a bit of a pain in the ass!

Any one get the 20D to work?

Hi,

I have also got to the same point as the last message. I also downloaded and installed libgphoto2, gphoto2 and gtkam and I can choose the Canon 20D as the camera, but the port section is gray (although the camera is on the desktop as a FLPhoto alias; removing this alias doesn't help).

I am using Mandrake 10.1.

So if someone has gotten this to work please post the solution!!!

Thanks,

Have you tried the same camera under an other operating system?

Works under Mac OS X (and windoze)

I sure have. It works fine with Mac OS X and Windows. I would rather use my Linux
box to store my photos etc. though and it would be nice to be able to hook the camera
up directly (especially for RAW transfers?).

Cheers,

j

Try to compile your own kernel from source and see if the problem persists.

If you don't know how there's a howto at
www.linuxlookup.com/html/guides/kernel.html
