thanks for the replies... tried changing to 1280x768, still can't change the resolution.
does it help that my device driver is VESA?

i currently have DefaultDepth set to 24
and Modes "1280x768"

but X starts at 1024x768 and only allows other options of 800x600?

i also tried 855resolution 3c 1280 768
which indicates chipset 855GM and reports that patch mode is complete...

i finally got it to work...
i used 855resolution module to patch my driver
855resolution 49 1280 768
then i added this line to my xorg.conf
Modeline "1280x768" 80.14 1280 1344 1480 1680 768 769 772 795
finally got my compaq v2000 running smoothly with slackware 10.2.

I had the same problem with a laptop ACER TravelMate 4152LMI. The graphics card is an on-board Intel with a 915GM chipset. I am running a Slackware 10.2.
The error messages I did get looked like:
(WW) I810: No matching device for instance (BusID PCI 0:2:1) found
(EE) I810(0): No valid FB address in PCI config space

First, I switched to kernel 2.6.17 and included the 915 chipset support but I still did get the same error. Next, I also upgraded x.org from 6.8.2 to 6.9.0 and it solved the problem.

You should try here:

http://people.freenet.de/renmi/acer4652.html

I don't speak German but I do understand that you might need to do the following:

Take at look at this link: http://people.freenet.de/renmi/acerXF86Config-4.txt its the person's XF86Config-4

Then you need to play around with your resolution, in your case you have done that already, with no luck, so download this hack: http://www.geocities.com/stomljen/

And last compile, make, and make install and use it to allow the desired resolution.

For mobile books I always check out http://www.tuxmobile.com.
