can't boot windows/unmountable_boot_volume (xp/mdk10 dualboot)

Hi,

I'm using a diff computer now but am runing xp/mdk 10 on may inspiron 1100 laptop. I've been using dualboot setup for three weeks. however, now when i turn on computer and try to boot to windows (grub), it displays the xp splash screen w/ the moving status bar and then gives me a blue screen/white text with the main word: "unmountalbe_boot_volume", and further later "STOP : 0x000000ED(0x82...,0x..., 0x...). It boots fine to linux and i can read the windows folders. tried booting the other boot program and it didn't change anything.

Do i need to reinstall xp and is there a way to do it w/o reformmating HD and erasing linux? thanks.

Hopefully, it's only something that's screwed up in the bootloader config. Check your bootloader config file (either /etc/lilo.conf or something in /etc for grub) and make sure your winXP part is pretty small. I don't remember since it's been so long since i dual-booted (aww...freedom).

Also, try reinstalling the original Windows bootloader. Boot with a Windows boot-up disk; at the prompt type in fdisk /mbr or something like that. Google for "restore windows bootloader."

If that fixes it, reinstall your mdk10 bootloader; you can do that by booting with the first CD, then messing around with the rescue options til you find the one called 'restore boot loader' or something.

Hope this helps...

How didn't it work? What exactly did you do? What part didn't work?

Usually that can be solved by fixing the Windows filesystem and/or boot sector as described in Microsoft knowledge base.

For me it still didnt work, despite doing like Microsoft suggested in its official solution. But I found out that there can be another source of this problem - when boot.ini (located in windows' c:\) refers to wrong partition with Windows OS (this kind of problem may happen if you play with multi-booting). Solution is to run bootcfg /rebuild from Windows CD's recovery console to add new entry to boot.ini, then reboot and use it to boot Windows.
