Can't add gnome menu items with smeg

Hi,

I'm trying to set up gnome in debian, but I want to be able to edit my menu. So I downloaded smeg, which I had already used successfuly in Ubuntu, and eventually managed to install it on Debian despite some dependency troubles. However, I can't actually add items to my menu. I can hide items that were already there, but for some reason adding items has no effect. I've made an attempt to make some sense of the ~/.config/menus/applications.menu and /etc/xdg/menus/gnome-applications.menu files, and as far as I can tell my entries are being added to the former, but I can't seem to fathom why they aren't showing up in my menu. Any ideas or assistance would be much appreciated.

I've had the same problem on Fedora. If you just change the visibility on already existing menu items does that work? I can do that at least, but nothing else (although, like you it looks to me like the new entries are added to the applications-menu file).

I'm running FC4 and have managed to add a couple of menu items without the benefit of a menu editor.
The item you add should be a .desktop file that ends up in /usr/share/applications. There is also a place for user only menus... think it might be in ~/.config somewhere.

Whatever the case, try cat menu-item.desktop and see if it contains Categories=Application;Office or something similar.
Internet stuff is the 'Network" category.

Can't think of any reason other than the categories for it not showing up. Sometimes, though not always, I had to log out then back in before it showed up.
