Can't access Samba shares with wireless network

I'm using Kubuntu. Ever since I started using WPA on my wireless home network, I cannot access the Samba shares from Remote Places in KDE 3.5. When I click on "Samba Shares", it will try to scan for Windows networks, and then give me a dialog telling me it can't find any workgroups and to try disabling my firewall (something I don't have). Now I can still access workgroup computers by typing in "smb://computername" in the URL field, but my printer is on one of these Windows machines, and since KDE can't find any Samba networks, it won't list the printer and thus I can't print. Does anyone else have this problem? What can I do to get KDE to see the workgroups again?

WPA and Samba

I can relate to this problem, although my story is somewhat different.

I have:
  • a W2K box
  • a Slackware (10.2) box with Samba 3.0.1
  • a laptop running xp
  1. Initially, all three computers were nicely connected (the laptop with unprotected wireless). They could see each other without a problem.
  2. I implemented WPA and since then my laptop is cutoff from my WORKGROUP, although it is connected to the internet for webbrowsing, email, ftp, etc. Neither the W2K box (through MyNetworkplaces) not the Slack box (through S4K) can see it. On my Slack box, smbclient gives me an error message (connection failed or something like that). My laptop cannot see any of the other computers on the WORKGROUP either any more (it used to, before having WPA).

NeoChaosX, if you got to solve your problem, please post.
My guess is that there is a problem between WPA and the SMB/CIFS protocol, whatever it is.

Should I go back to unprotected wireless??

OK, here is an update.
  1. I implemented static IDs for all my network and kept WPA. When you do that with laptops running XP, you have to enable Netbios over TCP on the laptop, which I did. I also added a lmhosts file with all the names on the network.
  2. I enabled my slack box as a WINS server, and also added my computers' names on lmhosts and hosts.

No I can browse my laptop from my slack box and my W2K box but nothing from my laptop (all of this with firewalls disabled everywhere).

I can say I solved one half of the problem.

Further ideas will be appreciated.
