Burning tar on cdr

I have a problem when burning a tar directly to cdr.
The reason for this is that mkisofs doesnt allow to include
files larger than 2GB. Somewhere i have read that it is possible to direclty write a tar file to a cd/dvd.

I wanted to practice with a cd-rw. So i did:

cdrecord -v dev=1,0,0 nvidiatest.tar

After burning i tried to read the tar:

prometheus:/work/base/t # tar xvf /dev/dvdrecorder
nvidia/
nvidia/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

It doesnt extract fully. I also tried -nopad and -raw for burning.

Any ideas anyone?

cdr troubles

how about trying to split the giga-sized files into smaller ones manually & then manually reassembling them? there are plenty of file splitters at least in windows to go around...

remember this is coming from a linux newbie, but a geek graybeard (the story's too long). I do no, that giga-sized files won't fit on a cd anyways, but i suppose mkfiso (sp?) can take that into account.
