Building Linux from scratch
 

I am going to wipe out everything on my old computer and put soley linux on it. It is a p2 300 with 64 Mb Ram (probably will update to 192; at least 128) it's got at least 5 Gb hardrive. I hear Slackware is the best even though it might be hard. Does anyone know where to get good information on doing this? i know there is the www.linuxfromscratch.org or something like that. what else do i need? i'd say the computer hardware is find besides the fact that i took out it's voodoo 3 3000 PCI card and sold it to a friend so i could whoop his ass in counter-strike.

I think linux from scratch is like building everything yourself.

While this is probably a great idea if you want to really know what gives with it. You might want to try one of the distros first so you can see what it's like.

It will take quite some time to build one up from scratch.

www.linuxfromscratch.com would be your source. depending on how much you know and fast download for all the packages required, i think taz.devil said the second time it took him 3 hours to build most of his LFS..
i am starting one myself.. taking my time to do everything by hand, then get it to work, then wipe everything out and do it quickly the way i want it..
but if you don't know anything, first tinker with a distro.. then you might want to dive in with the linux from scratch, so far i have had to do some work arounds to get packages installed on my box.. and this time i am experimenting with making my base install off of slackware 7.1.. next time use 8.0.

I am getting another computer next week.

Slack is going on it and a few more.

Maybe LFS should be one of them.

With enough people using it, maybe help won't be hard to find

LFS has been a real fun project, and after it's done, it seems to just keep going since it's a super duper stripped down version with nothing on it. Gotta put X and everything else on one by one. Kinda fun that way and it did seem to teach me alot more than even just using slack would. I suggest slack 8 as the base myself but any will do obviously. As trickykid said, he used 7.1 and had to do alot of workarounds that I didn't due to having newer versions etc. finegan used 7.1 also and had a lot of back n forthing too. Since you already have RH 7.2 though, it's super new enough to just use it as the host system. You don't need it for very long before you chroot into the lfs system anyhow. Go fer it...I'm not the most patient person and even I did it... LOL So it isn't too bad. ;)

I don't know why I am posting this, but exams are tomorrow and I got 2 of them. It's 11:13 and Metallica's DAMAGE INC. is blasting over and over. If you don't have, go out and get some of their old stuff like "Battery", "One", "Blackened", "Sanitarium". Everyone has already chirped in as much as possible, so I'll keep this short. There are two marathon threads going on LFS, here, and here. I think we stumbled accross just about every shortcoming involving LFS.

Another barebones approach to Linux would be Debian or Slackware as they both install rather minimally, although Debian probably more so, but I like things like a web browser on there by default...

I can't believe that people still know Social Distortion, they never did make it totally mainstream which I think is cool. Started out up here. My highschool best friend knew the lead and he got alot of killer unreleased works at the time. That reminds me I need to get on WinMX and find some stuff...
