Building Gnome 2.4 with Garnome (error)
I'm trying to upgrade to the newly released Gnome 2.4. However when using Garnome it errors out with the following:
Entering directory `/home/jimi/downloads/garnome/garnome-0.27.1/gnome/gucharmap/work/main.d/gucharmap-1.0.0/gucharmap'

I could be totally off here, but try moving your Garnome directory to /home/jimi/ instead of .../downloads/
What distro are you using? And how far does Garnome get?

Actually I ended up getting CVSGnome and ditching Garnome. I later found out that this is a known bug (bugzilla) with Garnome and RH9 installs that have Ximian2 installed.
Funny thing also is after all that work I've now switched to KDE.

The only thing I find Gnome has better than KDE is Gaim vs Kit. It's nice to have the buddy lists load automatically like they do for other versions of AIM, where no matter what computer you're on, the buddy list is the same....

Yes Gaim is nice and if I were using an IM that would be the one I would use....but I can run it from KDE as long as I have GTK etc still installed (which I do). It's nice that you can run KDE apps from Gnome and Gnome apps from KDE.
Truth is I like both Gnome and KDE almost equally.....it's been hard for me to choose one. I've been running Gnome for the last couple months (before that I was running KDE for a couple months) and now I'm back to KDE. I just can't make up my mind!!! :-)

I have had nothing but difficulty with Garnome. After finally realizing that it required bzip2-devel and not the libbz3-dev which is what Debian called it, it finally compiled. I wish the Garmone site had better instructions. However, It installed in the /root/garnome and when I follow the directions for running it as a session-script, I'm completely lost. So to test it, I ran Redhat 9 in pure shell mode and ran: exec /root/bin/gnome-session and just got errors. What am I doing wrong? And is there a easier was to install Gnome 2.4 on RH9?
Newbie, I know. Thanks in advance.

Well like I said above, I found it easier to install with CVSGnome ( http://www.akcaagac.com/). I ended up just commenting out the few items I was having compile errors with (i.e. gucharmap etc) and it installed just fine. This is just my personal opinion of course, I'm sure there are ppl out there that like Garnome better and may have advice for you on how to go about installing it with that instead.

undefined symbol: gucharmap_window_new
I've copied libgucharmap.* from /usr/local/lib to /usr/lib and it fixed the problem. It looks like libtool was not looking into the /usr/local/lib/
