Building from source on Android - Where to start?

Ok, so I've got myself and Android phone, and I'd like to be able to compile from source ON my phone (I want to be able to run some command line tools like eyeD3, lame, etc.). Problem is, how do I get GCC on my phone with such limited resources? The Android platform isn't exactly meant for developing on. Another option would of couse be compiling on my PC using a cross compiler, but I'm a newb when it comes to that - Anyone know some good resources for learning? All I need is a good push in the right direction.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts.

Other info: My phone is rooted and I'm running a custom ROM (Cyanogen 6.0.0) for those of you who care to know. Also, 'cat /proc/cpuinfo' tells me it's an "ARMv6-compatible processor rev 5 (v6l)".

Your first step in asking questions in re Linux/Unix should be The great majority of questions you could think to ask have already been answered somewhere. You would probably find your answer faster than waiting for someone to answer a question on a bulletin board. and search for "android build from source". The first hit that turns up when I run the search is the Android Build System, which allows one to build the entire system or individual applications.

Good luck.
