building a desktop environment

I would like to build a gtk+ compliant Desktop environment (something gnome-like) based on the sawmill window manager. The problem is with documentation. I could not find much info on how to start building one. Can anybody point out some god docs on how to do that?

Please!

Don't think about that so formally. Just use sawmill and apps you like, and it is enough of a desktop enviroment for you. The only time you have to think about it harder is if you are doing this for somebody else as well.

The problem is that I am doing it for somebody else and I would like to change the style a little bit. It should just include a stripped down version of Mozilla Firefox, a word processor and that's mostly it. The only thing is that it has to look good and be very easy to use.
Anyway thanks for your information so far. I really appreciate it.

It seems that you just answered your own question. It shouldn't be to much of a problem if you can install stuff whenever you need to. Look through your distro's packages.

Well I think i've got the general Idea of how things work. The problem is how to create things like a task-bar and how to customize the appearance?
Sorry if I ask stupid questions but I haven't experimented a lot with any window manager. :)
