Build libperl.so from perl source?

I just compiled perl 5.8.8 from source beacuse I needed UTF-8 support.

I've tried to find as much as I can regarging libperl.so, however I've just confused myself futher. perl seems to function, however I fist identified I needed libperl.so when vi threw me the error vim: error while loading shared libraries: libperl.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I eventually ran ld --whole-archive -share -o libperl.so.5.8 libperl.a and built libperl.so.5.8, and linked libperl.so to that. Then, vi threw me the error vim: relocation error: /usr/lib/libperl.so: undefined symbol: crypt What am I missing? I'd prefer to stick with my compiled/installd perl version, rather than have to find an rpm with libperl.so and do a cleanup of my install.
