BT5 Installation Question

Alright folks, hello! First off let me say that I have installed backtrack on my computer before. Multiple times. It was always burn the disk, pop it in, install the OS! However now I have an error. When I start up and type startx it loads my desktop like it is suppose to. Here is the problem: As soon as I click ANYWHERE the screen goes black and I am not at a text based interface with the error somewhere along the lines of "caught signal 11 segmentation error" "Shutting down serverX" Or something VERY similar to that.

I have looked into this quite a bit and can't seem to find a SOLID fix. My assumption is that it has to do with my video card. So I suppose the real question would be should I try to manually install my video card via some commands. If so, how might I go about doing that?

Thanks for everything guys!

If you give more details it would help.

Anyway it should be something related to X11 or graphic card.

To check what is your graphic card, just run:
Code:
lspci -v
When installing your graphic card, you will need to run the installation not in graphic mode, which means, run on mode init 3.

Depending the version of linux you are running the procedure to install and fix it will change slightly.

Ok so I still am having the issue. I checked my card version via lspci -v and then tried a couple of other things that I found on the nets including

Code:
update-pciids
and
Code:
yum install kmod-nvidia
both to no avail. So what do I need to do to access the video card updates from let's say Nvidias website or something? Since I can only browse and do anything via command line.

seeing as backtrack is based on ubuntu
why do you think that yum might be installed ?
and that you might be able to use a red hat based package manager on a ubuntu based OS
Quote:
yum install kmod-nvidia
you did NOT read the BT "howto's"
-- install nvidia card--
http://www.backtrack-linux.org/forum...ead.php?t=1056
step 1
read the BT5 tutorials
http://www.backtrack-linux.org/tutorials/
and the wiki
http://www.backtrack-linux.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
http://www.backtrack-linux.org/wiki/...hp/Basic_Usage
step 2
repeat step 1 where needed
