BSD "can't open display"

I just installed bsd on an old 386 pentium a client was throwing away. 32 mb RAM! Its so cool. Anyway all runs well except it appears x fails to load and it wont permit windowmaker maker or any other window managers. Although the RAM is funny to think about it shoud be sufficient to run a small glaphical like WM right?
Any way x won't load and I don't know where to turn. Linux is up so I'm posting on that box.
Oh I did a reinstall once thinking my install was bad but same deal.
thanks.
