Question Brute Force...

Typically, how long does a brute force take? I'm using John the Ripper on my fedora box trying to crack a normal MD5 password from a shadow file...its been going for 9 days now...no guesses. It says its working at about 2300 c/s...how long SHOULD it be taking?
