Browsers spin, on Fedora Core 4!
 

After upgrading from FC 1 to FC 4, FireFox, Opera and Mozilla all spin forever when I hit a URL. I get "Looking Up Host" or "Contacting Host" and nothing most of the time. I can Ping sites fine and my office network & GFTP seems fine as well...

I used YUM to get ALL patches as of today, 7/4 and no help...

Thunderbird is also unable to contact my IMAP server now, Yea! I've wasted hours on this and I need advice. I'm REALLY trying to STOP using Windows but crap like this keep me from it for hours at a time.........

Any help would be appreciated as I sit here in WIndows wanting to KILL that cute little penguin at the top of the screen! My scientist friends on Mac's just laugh and tell me to dump the buggy penguin! Can they be correct ?!?!?!?

Please be specific on help, I'm not a linux expert, just a pissed off Windows user tonite...

The "upgrade" option in anaconda will brek if you have (some) third-party software installed already. Further, the settings in your home directory won't all work right for the latest versions of some apps.

(In this case - the browser may be having trouble getting DNS info...)

Unless you have been using exclusively RH rpms (from RHN) then you may find the only solution is to do a clean install.

If the trouble is the browser settings for your home directory - you can try creating a new user and using the apps from that. If they go, this will confirm that it is your home directopry setting wot are at fault. Deleting the config directories, they will be hidden, will force apps to reconfigure.

However, there will probably be other things affected. Recommend: clean install.

Thanks for the note..... I was hopefull, but alas no luck. I created a new user and still nothing but browser spin and now I noticed even GFTP doensn't work.

This will now be my 3rd clean install in 2 weeks! I'll have to give it another go. The only un-RHN RMP I can think of I used was Opera.

My opinion of Core 4 is, wait till it's in better shape to upgrade....

Turn off SELinux this time - just for luck.
Backup your old files you want to keep - but otherwise reformat the partitions. This will garantee removing anything bogus.

(Even when you choose the "install" option, you get the option to keep existing files on some partitions. If you had opted to keep the fs on your root partition, then this would set things globally amiss.)

As you go - make notes about the options you picked.

I spoke to a Linux Guru here at work and figured out it's the DNS not working properly on my DSL Modem at home!
I didn't think of that because I'm not in the office enough to try it there. Everything magically works fine here at work ;-0

I think I got on the wrong debug path because Windows DNS works fine at home, whereas FC4 does not. I'm using DHCP and obtaining my IP each time from the DSL modem in Windows and FC4. But FC4 is not working with the DSL modem...

I'll post the DSL modem settings fix after I talk to Quest. Thanks for the support! I'm eating a big piece of FC4 Crow Pie at the moment... My faith is restored, I guess I need more of it, but it is hard figuring stuff out like this after a 8 hour day, school and putting the kids to bed and god forbid I actually have time to get busy with the wifie ;-)

I added the DNS IP's of my DSL Provider (Quest) to the /etc/resolv.conf file and I'm good to go ;-)

Of course - the internet config thing was supposed to do that for you when you entered your isp primary and secondary dns servers in the dialogs :/
