Browser question
I have Mandrake 9.0 and currently use mozilla, which seems to do okay, but slow to load. Galeon and konqueror also installed, and they also seem slow. Also - I need Java for a group I go to, and read that Galeon and Konqueror both have problems with it.
I've looked around and seen mention of Opera, but also comments that it crashes with Java (in a Mandrake 9.1 review I think). This is for leisure use, so just need something small and quick. I'd appreciate ideas. I had tried Opera in Windows before I came to Linux and it seemed okay. Didn't try it with Java enabled though I think. I need stable versions of anything I use as am a newbie. Comments as to the truth of what i have been reading, and recommendations appreciated. Thanks Rose :) :) |
try phoenix (a mozilla offspring tuned for small size and speed)
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/phoenix/ |
With Mozilla (and then also Galeon and Phoenix), try http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.html#Java
|
Is Phoenix stable for newbies to use?
If I have already downloaded Java and installed to mozilla can it be used for Konqueror and Galeon also? Thanks :) |
I've used Mozilla, Netscape 4, Konqueror, and Netscape 6. I'm currently using Netscape 6, as it seems to support Java, displays pages correctly, and is completely stable so far, no crashes such as I frequently experienced with Internet Explorer.

Okay I'll take a look then.
Thanks Rose PS It's not too big? |
Maybe skipstone? ( but i don't know if it has java support )
|
Hadn't heard of Skipstone so will take a look.
At the moment having to work out of Windows!!! Installed Mandrake 9.1 and can't get XFree configured to work - very, very frustrating to say the least! Thanks for suggestion Rose |
I recommend getting the new Netscape 7.0 browser.....from http://www.netscape.com
its alot faster than previous versions.......and handles html and java very well. the only downfall is it is about the same speed as konqeror. But if your a speed freak Operas the only real choice right now..... |

Thanks Rose |
I use opera and haven't really had any Java problems...
the only bummer is that the ads are a drag unless you're willing to pay (i did) You're choice.. |
Another really really fast browser is DILLO. I use it to load local pages, and, even if far from perfection, it is graphical and it's moreless as fast as lynx to load.

I've posted stuff like this a lot, so sorry if I'm being a broken record - I'm sure Netscape 7x is fine, but it's basically Mozilla 1.0 with some branding and a cool feature or two added with several cool features stripped. The main development is (was) the other trunk with Mozilla 1.3, 1.4, though it looks like that'll be ending with 1.5. So if you've got Netscape and like it, go ahead and switch to Mozilla. If you've got it and don't, you probably won't like Mozilla either. It's mostly identical code. So then there's Phoenix, which is Mozilla-lite and apparently stealing the main path from my favorite browser - it's a stripped browser-only branch of Mozilla code.
And Dillo's cool. :) |
