Brother printer HL-2270DW driver - Brother solutions offer four - which one?

I am running Linux Mint 10 and have had to replace my printer. I chose a Brother because it was compatible with Linux. I installed CUPS and then installed the cupswrapperdriver, format: deb. from the Brother Solutions website. The printer is now recognized and set as the default printer. I have tried for hours to do a print job without success.

the following drivers are also offered:
LPR driver rpm 2.1.0-1 38 KB 2010.Oct.1
cupswrapper driver rpm 2.0.4-2 15 KB 2010.Oct.1
LPR driver deb 2.1.0-1 36 KB 2010.Oct.1

Have tried reading about rpm, but still do not understand.

Have I installed the wrong driver? Any advice would be appreciated.

Well, what kind of printer subsystem are you using? If you're using dumb-ol' lpr, then you'd use that driver. If you're using CUPS, you'd use that one and so on. You'd probably choose the most-recent version in any case.

per Brother site, shouldn't you have installed the drivers in this order? Well you would choose the .deb files instead.

LPR driver rpm 2.1.0-1 38 KB 2010.Oct.1
cupswrapper driver rpm 2.0.4-2 15 KB 2010.Oct.1

At least that is how I installed the drivers for my MFC-5440cn.

sundialsvcs:

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I have no idea what a printer subsystem lpr is. Another learning curve coming up! As for the release date, you will see from my post that they were all issued on the same day. I appreciate your input. J.

Fred:

I think I see what you are saying - Either I installed them in the wrong order, or I should also install the LPR driver deb 2.1.0-1 36 KB, Okay, will try to rectify the situation.

thanks very much for your help. J.

Basically you need to install the deb packages in that particular order:
Quote:

dpkg -i hl2270dwlpr-2.1.0-1.i386.deb
and then

Quote:

dpkg -i cupswrapperHL2270DW-2.0.4-2.i386.deb
Also if your version of Mint is 64-bit, you need to install ia32-libs or lib32stdc++ (at least that's recommended for Debian/Ubuntu)

Obviously you need to connect the printer using a usb cable. Once you've got it working you could disconnect the cable and try
to add wireless support (see this link. The wifi instructions should be distro-agnostic)

If you get it working, please let me know if Evince and LibreOffice print correctly. I've got the same printer and have issues with those 2 applications.

Thank you so much. Printer now working. Just installed as per above instructions. Sicamorex: Don't do Wifi and use OpenOffice, however will try LibreOffice and let you know the results. June

Glad you got it working.

Waiting for your LibreOffice feedback.

HL-2170DW driver just works

I'm running Opensuse 11, just bought an HL-2270 and no driver was autodetected. I opted to choose a driver from the list of all available and chose the HL-2170DW PCL5 driver. It works fine, even duplex works. I've only given it a few quick pages with LibreOffice 3.4, which worked fine.

I also just bought a Brother HL-2270DW and no driver was autodetected in OpenSuSe 12.2. I set this up in YAST using the HL-2170DW driver worked with no errors or problems (test page from CUPS prints, printing from LibreOffice works, duplexing works).
