Hi

My linux red hat 9 box just shutdown itself, what log can I view to see what happened, I checked the var/log/messages and all I can see is the last entry for "cups"

cups is a printer deamon, can it shutdown my box?

Thanks

Your looking at the correct log file but I wouldn't think cups would take your whole machine down. Maybe you should perform a few tests or so? Sure you didn't have a small glitch in power, etc?

see if you're using some kind of watchdog. this is software that can reboot you pc if something failed and the device /dev/watchdog isn't written to for a adjustable amount of time. also acpi can switch your pc down (heat problem, power button pressed,..). also a kernel panic (internal error) is able to reboot your box....

for a better understanding of your problem we'll need more information, like your dmesg output, computer configuration,..and did it reboot controlled or did it crash?

there are various logfiles under /var/log (? i'm not sure about the slackware location). they get comressed (.gz) and/or moved (with extension .0, .1.gz,..) if they grow large enough. have a look at them. see at what time that happend and send in (parts of) that logfiles too if you don't understand some things they say.

the right on would be "messages" at the time the error happend.

you can look at them with "less messages" or if it's compressed "zless". don't send in the hole file since it could be large.
also you "dmesg"-file is important to see what's going on at bootup.

for privacy you'll have to remove things you don't want other to see (ipaddresses, usernames).

did it reboot controlled or did it crash?
what did the pc do when it was happening (more than once?)?
are you running ACPI?

sl mritch.
