Bootup screen

I compiled my new kernel which is 2.6.2 and I setup to use the bootup logo. Now I cannow get the resolution to 1024x768. In /etc/lilo it is set to be 1024x768, but it isn't. Any ideas on how to remove from kernel without recompile of kernel or is there another fix I am missing? I am using Slackware 9.1
