bootsplash initial ramdisk error

I just patched my kernel with bootsplash, and it apppears at first, but then i get an error, something about no finding a compressed ramdisk at block 0. I can't post the actual error message because i have to then reboot with my working kernel, which overwrites the dmesg buffer. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

I rebooted again, the errors, in more detail, look roughly like this:

cannot open root device LABEL=/ or 00:00
append root= to kernel options
kernel panic: unable to mount root fs

I do have a root=LABEL=/ in that boot entry for the kernel.
