booting problems

Hi,

I have a dual boot system with XP on /dev/hda1 and redhat 8.0 on /dev/hda4.
When I try to boot into linux, the words "GRUB" apper on a black screen, but nothing else happens. Here is a copy of my grub.conf:

------------------------------------

# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You do not have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /, eg.
# root (hd0,3)
# kernel /boot/vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hda4
# initrd /boot/initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hda4
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,3)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.18-24.8.0)
root (hd0,3)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-24.8.0 ro root=/dev/hda4 hdc=ide-scsi
initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.18-24.8.0.img
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.18-14)
root (hd0,3)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-14 ro root=/dev/hda4 hdc=ide-scsi
initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.18-14.img
title DOS
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

-------------------------------

In the kernel lines it had "root=LABEL=/", which i changed to root=/dev/hda4, but that didn't help. What is "root=LABEL=/" for?
I've verified the paths and they are all ok. Any ideas?
Should I reinstall grub?
Thanks a lot.

Install grub on Linux's first sector. It works for my friend.

It was working fine before, with no booting problems, then I think I installed imwheel, and the next time it booted, it wasn't working.
Any ideas?
