Boot Red Hat Linux 9.0

I was previously using Red Hat Linux 9.0 on my old gateway computer.
But i had accidently did "format /mbr" in dos which gets ride of grub. Meanwhile, i haven't creat any backup file since my installation. So i want to know if there is anyway i could get it working again. Or does anyone have suggest about reinstall my Red Hat Linux 9.0 from hard drive or network? I have a Belkin's PCMCIA F5D5020 ethenet card. But i don't have cable connection and it's connected to my desktop.

%%%Note, my cdrom wasn't working. So, there is no way about install from cdrom. i installed my box before it brokes.

Get ( d/l ) a Linux boot floppy, boot it, mount your current Red Hat installation to /mnt/hd, then use 'chroot /mnt/hd', logout & login again, and it's like your at the command line of the Red Hat you have installed. Use the bootloader tool RH provides, or run 'grub-install /dev/hda'.

but it doesn't boot into the system instead it restarts!!

boot thru the installation disk

go to rescue mode by typing

linux resuce

and then following the instructions

His cdrom doesn't work. Unless he can download the floppy image for installation/rescue, he can't use 'rescue mode'.
tricky_linux,
What do you mean, 'instead it restarts', is this when you try to boot with floppy? Try this floppy:
http://ncart.scs.ryerson.ca/pub/slac...otdisks/bare.i
Use this to write it in Windows if needed.
http://ncart.scs.ryerson.ca/pub/slac.../RAWRITEXP.EXE
It is just a kernel. Tell it where your RH partition is with 'root=/dev/[disk]', and toss in the 'single' option to boot at a command line. Then use '/sbin/grub-install /dev/hda''

to aaa~
but does it work with redhatlinux ? wasn't for slackware?

tricky_linux 11-26-2003 08:33 PM

and how come both of the links was temparily unavailable?

aaa 11-27-2003 08:21 AM

It is just a Linux kernel on a floppy, no Slackware specific stuff in it.
Try these links, I forgot to check the first two:
ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/d...otdisks/bare.i
ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/d.../RAWRITEXP.EXE

Corruption!! Hailllllllll

I did what you said and it did workout. But during i was booting my linux kernel. there is an error Modprobe : Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.4.20/modules.dep.
Right here, i don't even think it's possible. I am running redhat linux 8.0 which was running kernel 2.4.18 and the only two thing that's under /lib/modules was /2.4.18 and /2.4.18-custom.
anyway, i want to know how can i recovery the file that's corrupted or how can i found out which file was corrupted?

tricky_linux 11-28-2003 01:46 PM

to aaa~~
after i had done what you said. But instead of booting my corrupted file system. I just hit enter. then it asked me for "VFS: Insert root floppy and press ENTER"
Where can i download it?

aaa 11-29-2003 08:44 PM

So what exactly did you do? You booted with the floppy &...? When you boot from the floppy's kernel (which is 2.4.20) it may complain about not finding it's modules. But when you boot from your original RH kernel after fixing grub it shouldn't complain.
Here's the root disk:
ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/d...sks/rescue.dsk
It'll boot a rescue system. Take a look at my first post for what to do.
Take a look at this too:
