boot disk ?

Hi!

some time ago i wanted to know about boot disk, since i had two old computers (IBM and UNYSIS) i wanted to install linux. The bios was unable to recognize the cdrom device, so i start looking other ways and found among others this :

quote :
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you mean a floppy disk from which you boot so that you can then access the CDrom for installing linux or whatever, you will have to look at the specific instructions. Usually, it is a matter of copying stuff (an image file) to a floppy using a special program (e.g. rawwrite.exe) that usually are provided with on the CDs or for download.

is this correct ? A boot disk can contain information that will let me boot from cdrom ? can anyone comment on that , please ?(sorry for not posting who did the comment but i just had too many serchs going on that i forgot by the time i got here) thanks for any reply

PS : I am reading bootdisk howto but that's heavy stuff and plus ''el burrito''.

A boot disk will not really help you if the CD-ROM device isn't recognized by the BIOS, but if you can't boot from CD (common on older hardware) you can boot from the floppy and then install from the CD. Refer to the installation manual for your distribution for instructions.
