I can't find a way of switching to bold, italic or underline while composing an email with Kmail.

Any idea ?

It's right there next to <standard> and just below <any> just click the drop-down box.

Click to create new mail, then go to: Settings-->Configure Toolbars--> Drag what you need from Available Actions to Current Actions. This should add your choice/s to the tool bar.

I'm using version 1.7.1 - maybe upgrading to the newer one will solve the problem, I can't say I noticed those functions missing in version 1.6.1

Have you tried Mozilla-Thunderbird?

i'ii try upgragind to 1.7.1 and see what happens.
Maybe it all has to do with my KDE configuration??

I doubt it's caused by KDE, but you never know. Try the upgrade first before you start making changes to your KDE.
