bogus logical disk sectors...oh my

recently i messed around with gentoo and eventually i gave up so i reinstalled slackware. when i was messing with gentoo i installed grub. then when i switched back to slack i used lilo. everything seemed fine until i tried to boot to windows and i saw that some parts of grub were still hanging around. so i booted to the windows cd and rewrite the mbr and boot sector and windows worked, but this meant that it deleted lilo in the MBR, so i had to reinstall lilo from the slackware cd. now i am able to boot into both OS's but when i boot to linux i get an error message somewhere saying something to the affect of FAT:bogus logical disk sector 0. even when i take my fat partition out of fstab it seems to come up. can anyone help?

hmmm, I can't help but as its been a week heres my 2 cents worth

1) on the original boot loader config your pointer was to the sector next to the mbr (but not in the mbr) AND on overwrite you may have chosen a new sequence such as from the partition itself.

2) if I am right one way could be do confirm this by re-installing grub to the partiion instead of to the mbr and see it that overwrites that sector info?

3) If you have boot disks and they boot without errors, that could well be the confirming sector issue.

4) There are DISK editor programs but I am loathe to recommend at this stage. The other technique is easier to test and assumes you know how to make up boot disks for each operating system
