Block-by-block HD Latency tester
 

Hey guys

First off, not sure whether this would fall under software or hardware, but..

I'm looking for a piece of software that will scan a hard drive and test the latency for each block and indicates bad blocks. I have a program that does this exact same thing for windows, called HDDScan. I also has a really neat graph, which lets you see how the latencies changed over the scan. It also reads smart error, but the smart portion is no so necessary, as I can get that another way.

Currently I plan on putting it on a repair SquashFS (Parted Magic) on a flash drive. So I would prefer just the binary if possible, but a .deb would would if i extracted it.

Any hits?

I don't know of any, but I also don't think that such a tool would make too much
sense in a multi-tasking / -user environment. How would it know whether the performance
hit it's getting is from a bad block, or because some other process happens to try to
write to it at the same time?

I'd get the OEM hard drive diags and run them or at least generic ones. Why re-invent the wheel. The hard drive makers offer some good tools. Generally bootable.
