1) If you are using Eterm, there's a "toggle transparency" option from the menu (then you just save your settings.
Note:
1 - If you want to do it from the command line, 'man Eterm' will give you the switch (I don't remember by heart).
2 - In blackbox, Eterm transparency won't work unless you first use Esetroot to set your background image.
