black screen of death

Hi,

i tried to extract csv files from my debian toughbook at work offshore and it went crazy,i tried a soft restart and now i have to just turn it on and off.

When it boots up it eventually gets stuck with the black screen with a white flashing x in the middle.Luckily the company has a back up but would like to sort this from west africa if possible rather than send it back to germany, any ideas.

thanx Martin

You don't say at which stage you're stuck.

If you don't get even a non functional grub, you've probably dead hardware.
Try a boot cdrom; then admit defeat. It hurts a hardware guy to say that, but it's probably best.

Otherwise be clear as to exactly how far you get and what options you have.

Download a Knoppix DVD and boot your PC with it. You are going to be able to extract your files because Knoppix is going to mount your partitions.

Thanks for the swift replies guys, much appreciated, the laptop was flown back to the beach in Africa this morning,i have limited download speed on this rig to download progs and it looks like it will have to be restored to factory setting and if that doesnt work and it an hardware issue it will be flown to Germany for repair.

thanks again for your comment
