Black screen

i have a problem with what i thinks is my framebuffer,

i have a nvida geforce 4 card and i am using then gentoo distro

the problem is that when i start X i cannot access my VTs anymore nor reboot or halt my system. the screen just goes blank

i really do not know what causes this problem, just post anything you may think is the reason, the reason why i think it may be the framebuffer is that when i try it i get the same black screen, and i can't come up whith another option...

i wont care to post my XFree-log becouse it gives no errors or other useful information (i think)

Do you see anything at all when it boots?

Have you tried to reconfigure X?

yes, X boot alright, but when X is up i cannot switch back to vt nor reboot or halt, the system just goes blank and hangs....

i don't think it has anyting to do with the X configuration, because it worked fine for a while and just suddenly started to crash,

i have use the newest drivers from nvidia.com but they are pretty old (since the summer or something), maybe this is the problem

have tried it all...

but i think it has something to do with the framebuffer, read something about that X had to swith the mode back properly or the vts would get stuck... dunno how to do this....
