black boot screen? or Misconfiguration?

ok...here it is...i am on fedora core 5...when i did the installation...i did in linux lowres...everything went fine and all...after changing my boot order and the duration of the operating system selection screen (which is working perfectly), I only get a black screen when booting up..actually, I get as far as:

STARTING UDEV [OK]

then nothing...the screen goes black...if I do a alt+control+F1...then screen comes back to me but there is nothing i can do because the system is hung (sort of)...if then do a alt+crtl+F8, the screen only goes to black again...none of the other F key work with the alt+ctrl...

I did go into the X11/configsys.conf file and change the resolution from 800x600 , 600x480 to 600x480, 800x600...also changed the driver to vesa...there was somewhat of a change...but the change was dramatic...when I boot up...got a blue screen that was all distorted and mangled...

i hope I explained this situation properly in order to get a firt time fix...thank you all in advance for your expertise...

Sounds like a Misconfigured xserver to me. I would continue to play with the drivers until I got something useful. What type of video card are you using? ATI and nVidia both have proprietary drivers that you can get for them, and they work quite well. If you are using an nVidia card, try changing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf driver line to read "nv" instead of the "vesa" that you have now. Im not sure what you would do if you have an ATI card, as I don't really...ever use them

yea...i have a ATI radeon ... cannot seem to find anything for it...anybody else have idea?

Well, it seems that you can try two different drivers for X here..."ati" for older hardware and "radeon" for newer hardware. Not sure where they draw the line between new and old though. If those dont work, try them both again without having "dri" or "GLCore" enabled in the config (do this by putting a # infront of the line containing either "dri" or "Glcore") Hope this sheds some light!

Can you boot at least into Runlevel 3?

torontostephen 05-25-2006 12:20 PM

Hi...sorry for the delay...i could not boot into run level 3 unless i did a rescue install, get to the rescue prompt then chroot /mnt/sysimage...then edit the menu.lst...but still didn't know where to go from there...I have removed fedora and replaced it with redhat 9 out of frustration...the machine boots up just fone except for a little distortion just before the sign on screen

Glad to hear you got something up and running!
