Bit Torrent and azureus-2.1.0.4 question

First, I have heard a lot lately about Bit Torrent. What exactley is it and what are the pro's and con's. Second, I am going to download azureus-2.1.0.4 but I am not sure what to download. There is the gtk(i386,) motif(386,) and source(platform Independent.) I prefer source but I am not sure. This is new to me and I am doing about a half dozen other different things with with my computer right now, lol, so any info on this would be a great help.

Any thoughts, suggestions or opinions are welcome.

Thanks.

Bit torrent is a file sharing protocol that is well suited for large files and lots of demand. It is in wide use to distribute things like Linux ISOs and other large files.

It works by connecting a tracker, which manages the bandwidth flow (the "torrent" of bandwidth). It operates on a share while you download model so that the flow of bandwidth spreads evenly across all leechers (downloaders). People who complete the download become seeders, helping to coordinate bandwidth flow by uploading to the most needy as determined by the tracker.

Bit torrent tends to suffer routinely from idiots who disable upload. Some trackers IP ban these people. Other trackers limit people's download speed to their upload speed.

I suggest you install straight bit torrent. apt-get install bittorrent in Debian. Similar command in other distros I'm sure. Once installed, run btdownloadcurses file.torrent to download with the terminal or btdownloadgui file.torrent to download with a gui in X.

Note: make sure you have libwxgtk2.4-python installed if you want to run btdownloadgui

Thanks for the reply. I use URPMI with Mandrake 10.1 Commuinty. Bittorrent comes withthe discs so I didn't have to download anything. I will play around with Bittorrent and see how it does. Thanks again.
