binutils and ld

when i try to install my nvidia drivers i get a message that says cannot find system tool ld and then it says make sure that binutils is installed. i would go into the software installer that comes with linux and select the files named this but last time i tried installing xmms all the other programs were deleted from my computer, including the software installation program and i had to format my hard drive, how can i safely install this package without worrying about everything else dissapearing afterwards and without worrying about checking off every program that i want to keep?
