I'm assuming "their website" is the gnu website.
Where did you install the new binutils (full path)?

a) What is your $PATH?
b) do you happen to have programs like ld in both /bin and /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin?
c) When were the binutils you are now using modified?
d) By the way, why compile your own binutils when your distro surely has a package?
