BIG Fedora Core 2 booting problems!!

Hi,

This morning I turned my Fedora Core 2 machine on and it all started fine but when it got to "Red Hat nash version 3.5.22 starting" (Or something simular) it doesnt go beyond that point! I have tried the "linux rescue" method but it freezes when trying to serach for Fedora Core Installations... But I can skip that and go straight to the command line rescue thing but no commands work like "su" etc... Im really stuck, a) I cant get my files out of there to save and b) I cant even install Fedora Core 2 again cause it needs to serach for Fedora Core installtions!!!

PLEASE help

Thanks,

EG

Hope it is not a disk crash/corruption.

when you jump to commandline (Alt-F2) enroute to rescue, can you fdisk and and check your partitions are intact.

you can run fsck to do the file system checking. but you must have the live cd version so that you can execute this on the command line and be sure to run it as root

You can use a distro like Knoppix to do fsck. By the way, if you get out of this alive (), I think you should use a different distro, since Fedora Core has a tendancy to chew up partition tables, which is probably what happened to you.

I have Knoppix 3.1 (or something, the newest) when I put that in the drive what should I do then? Also in refernece to another Distro I would like to try Slackware 9.1 but what Kernel should I use? And is there anyway to update my packages like Up2Date on RH?
