[SOLVED] Best software to broadcast a webcam video stream to view remotely with a browser?

Hello all,

I have a usb webcam that I wish to view the video of, on a lan. The clients are not under my control and so can only really view the video using a web browser.

What software is available for this task?
What software have you used and can share your experience of?

So far I've tried to use vlc for the streaming, but I've been unable to view the stream with anything but vlc on the client (I have one under my control while I get the system going).

Suggestions please!

I use a little command line utility called motion - it'll probably be in your distro's repositories. It includes a built in web server allowing you to broadcast the webcam, which is then accessible through a web browser. The config file (/etc/motion.conf by default) might need tweaking, but this is what I've used successfully.
