Lightbulb Best Distro foe Old celeron

I am trying to find a good linux distro for myu old celeron 2.26 GHZ pc. IT has 1gb of ran and plenty of hardrive space.
I loaded pclinux os on it and it was as slow as dirt. Windows ran faster on this pc. It took 15 minutes for PCLinuxOS to boot!
I am downloading ultraX and vector linux and was going to try them.
If anyone has a better option for an older celeron 2.26GHZ (this is one of the celerons that came out in the Pentium 4 days)
I am all ears.

All I want to do is surf the net and use open office some.

Thanks

It's probably down to customisation of a distro - Your box is probably not so old that you'd have to use Puppy or DSL.
Try debian or slackware 12.2 (just make sure that you don't use kde or gnome - xfce seems like a sound choice here).
Once you've installed a distro, check if it's not running unnecessary services.

Weird, I installed Debian Squeeze on a Celeron 600 / 256 MB a few weeks ago and it runs fully satisfactory, even with KDE 3.5. Unbelievable for such a antique thing, so you system is all but old.

If you are running KDE 4 by any chance, try to find a distro which still is provided with KDE 3.5. I heard Debian squeeze comes with KDE 4, but Debian Lenny still runs KDE 3.5. And with such hardware you shouldn't have any issues with outdated drivers.
