hi, I wanted to ask you people what you think is the best console ICQ client

I vote mICQ, what would you suggest ?

console is best for low-memory and/or cpu computers, while X can *sometimes* steal almost 100 MB from your memory that doesn't quite qualify....

the irc gateway thing is a good idea, but that's only useful if you use irc at all.......

Yea it's very good if you already use irc.
And that's probably also why I find it the easiest to use. Nevertheless have my friends no problem chatting in an irc client. It's a bit different but once you have the basic commands you can easily use it and there are so many irc clients to choose from that there's a higher chance that you'll like one :). And irc clients are on many platforms, so you could connect to a public bitlbee server (possibly your own) from many computers. It's more flexible.
To everyone his own of course.
