Batch files

I am pretty new to linux so this may sound dumb but here goes.

I would like to do some automation with my linux. In DOS I used batch files to do these things. What are the equivelent to batch files in linux? Is there a howto I can read?

You need a shell script. There are several flavours of shell, but the most common default is bash
