Batch File Converting using Acidrip/Memcoder Keeping the same name

Im trying to convert rather alot of Avi Files to Mpegs. I have tried to use the queue but it renames all the files to the same name.
What I plan on doing is to place all Avi`s in a folder eg /home/avi/ and batch convert them to mpegs but keep the same name...
no1.avi to become no1.mpeg,
No.2avi to become no.2.mpeg.

If acidrip cant do it then can memcoder from the terminal?

Been searching and found this

Code:
for i in *wmv; do mencoder $i -ovc copy -oac pcm -o "${i}.pcm"; done
can this be adapted to

Code:
for i in *avi; do mencoder $i -ovc copy -oac pcm -o "${i}.mpeg"; done
Would this work? or am I barking up the wrong tree?
