ok, soon after posting this i realized 2 ways to do this. first is with jhead; you just have to use the date offset feature. it appeared that you could only offset hours:minutes using the -ta flag, and that the -da or -ts flag had to be used to set a greater length of time. however, just offset by 8970 (24hoursx365days) using -ta8970:00. yes, i know that's obvious.
2nd way is with digikam, which i couldn't get working last time i tried it (wouldn't import photos), but now magically works. there's a set date/time entry in the "image" menu; select the relevant pictures and offset by 1 year.
