Basic MSN messenger?
Where can I find a basic MSN messenger for my RHL 9?
|
Yes, you can download AMSN which is a clone of MSN messenger. You will require to install tcl/tk libraries.
AMSN - www.amsn.sf.net TCL/TK - www.tcl.tk (download the RPMs) |
Just use gaim, which supports just about any IM server/client.
gaim.sourceforge.net |
Just FYI I tried installing gaim from RPMs but it has too many dependencies like some spelling library etc... i tried installing all of the dependencies but it was just worthless wasting my time over it.

lol don't confuse me, so which is the easiest to install?
|
AMSN I guess
|
Alrighty! I'll attempt to install it as soon as my cd rom lets my cd go... lol for some reason it's not ejecting it.
EDIT: It's not finding the first site but I'm now downloading the libs |
Ok I got the libs, unziped them to a folder, now what do i do?
I'm sorry I have no clue how to operate linux machine but I won't be too much pain as I'm a very confident Windows machine admin. |
if its source code then :
look at the README and INSTALL files to see if special configre steps are needed then ./configure --prefix=wheretoinstall make make install |
isn't make command to compile it to kernel?
Read the readme files and I have to say it's rather hard to install just a messenger program. ANy easier way to do this? Common guys, don't scare me off on my first day :) |
make is used to compile any source file(s).

Hey dude, thats Linux for you. There isnt anyway you will be able to just point and click and install stuff.
BTW did your cd-rom let go of your CD? |
lol yeah it did let it go finally. I think a folder was open showing CD content, closed it and it let it go, wierd for me but maybe it's the way linux works and i'll get used to it.
As far as the messenger goes, can someone convert that readme file to plain english? I mean if I can atleast get messenger installed i can work on linux all night and not get cut off from world. Of course I could use my other PC but it's not exactly near me. And to be honest, I know what you're thinking about me right now, a n00b. :D I do the same when people post on my forums with questions of the above level.... I won't mind anything. |
Bleh I too am a n00b by a higher standard =P. Ok, did you download the tcl/tk binaries for Redhat?
To install AMSN all you have to do is unzip to /usr/local/msn and then run "wish amsn". It will start up =). |
Update: I was updating my linux and saw this "gaim" option, chose it, linux updated itself and now i have the messenger program which will connect to aim, icq, yahoo, msn and more. Do i need anything else? I'm happy with what I got for now.
But I'm just curious, if it was included in the linux update, how did you guys not know about it. Regardless of all the above blabin' thanks so much for the help, I'll be sure to send more n00bs here ;) |
How did you 'update' Linux? Be sure you have the latest version of gaim since M$ changes its protocols to prevent use of non-MSN software.
|
The red exclamatory mark on bottom right, double clicked on it and it took me through a series of heavy downloads, so called updates for my computer. One of the items was gaim and yeah it's working as we speak. So it's gotta be the latest verion..... Woohoo! Auto install! Yay!
|
Great. But were you able to register? Because it kept saying 'Problem registering username' for me =(
|
it was having problem connecting to yahoo, it connected to AIM and MSN no problem. Am chatting with a buddy now.
|
No, I meant while updating your system it asks you to register with a username. Did it register fine?
