Bash weirdness

I have just installed Linux from Scratch, and I'm having a couple of troubles with Bash-2.05a:
Firstly, although I symlinked
/usr/src/kbd-1.08/data/keymaps_Z/i386/qwerty/uk.map.gz
to the correct place, and it finds the map on boot, there is one problem with the keyboard.
Instead of the sterling sign, which should be <shift>3 (I am on a US keyboard at work, and it doesn't have it), I am getting # followed by a carriage return. All of the other keys work as normal.
Secondly, although /etc/profile sets PS1=\u@\h \\$, I get something like:
user@hostname ~#
So the backslash and $ are appearing incorrectly.

Could anyone help with these? They're not big problems, but they are slightly weird and annoying
Thanks
Guy

"So the backslash and $ are appearing incorrectly."

Here is where WebmastaX had a similar problem. Maybe his solution will help you.
